Comic books were a privilege. At least for me it was. I grew up with a mother who had believed they were a hindrance to my faith. It may seem extreme, but it could probably be traced back to a point when I was reading Ghost Rider, and I foolishly left it on my desk for my very Christian mom to discover.
Since then, she had associated all comic books as “devil books.” From that point on I had to smuggle all the comic books I’d buy from the discount bins at my local comic book dealer and stash them in my shoe box under my bed (By the way, comic books fits really well in Nike Boxes).
Only when I was sure my mom was asleep, I’d sneak a choice comic book under my blanket with my trusty mag light and would enjoy adventures of Spiderman, Iron Man, Dr Strange and pretty much all the popular Marvel characters that most people now know and love via way of Disney’s billion dollar intellectual property. I also learned, it gets uncomfortably hot and humid in exactly 12 minutes under the blanket.
But I accepted that this was a rite of passage, this is how I must pay the toll of being a true comic book fan. Sure, my mom might have been a tad bit extreme, but it was still a privilege nonetheless that I was able to drift into a wonderful world of heroism crafted by Stan the man.
This would go on for years, and my shoe boxes would grow over time and I grew in confidence that my stash would never be discovered. Unfortunately, my mom would eventually discover my not at all suspicious 8 shoes boxes under my bed that seemed to constantly expand by the month. How could she possibly discover this?
I returned home from high school one fateful day, to find my collection missing. I still remember the feeling of a dropped heart, a sense of loss that was hard to match up my adult life. My mom had threw them all out because they were “Satan’s book”
